Avalanche Saddlebag Power Locks
Installation Instructions
Remove the factory lock assemblies by gently pressing in the catch with a small screwdriver or similar and then rotate the assembly counter clockwise while still pressing in on the catch. The lock assembly will then pull down and out from it’s mounting hole in the lid. See Fig. 1
1

Remove the C-clip and the black plastic “locking sear” at the open end of the lock assembly.Carefully remove the roll pin that the OEM locking catch rotates on. This will require a very small diameter( .080” dia. ) screwdriver or punch or similar. This is best done on a workbench with a spacer of some sort underneath to allow room for the pins to slide out. Next, remove the lower roll pin. See Fig. 2 NOTE: for 2007 model Avs there is no lower roll pin. You must drill a new hole and add the 6-32 screw and locknut.
2
Note: Do NOT re-drill the very small hole in the center of the new part. The roll pin must fit tightly in this hole.
Using the plastic template
Place the plastic template provided with your kit on the OEM lock body with the white side against the metal lock body. The template should be positioned so the holes in the template align with the raised “bosses” where the roll pins go into. Now precisely mark the location for the new hole. Use a small drill bit to pre drill the hole. See Fig.3
3

If you choose not to use a drill press you should at least use the template on both sides of the lock body and drill each side.
4
5
Remove the spring from the original lock catch and place it on the new lock catch in the same way it was on the OEM catch.
See Fig. 6
6
Carefully insert the new part into the lock assembly body just as the original part was installed. See Fig. 7
7

Now re-install the pivot roll pin into the lock body. You can usually shove the roll pin into the assembly with the top of the handle of a screwdriver however you may have to tap it in.
Next, re-install the lower roll pin. (ON 2007 LOCKS, INSTALL THE 6-32 SCREW AND LOCKNUT, SEE FIG. 8) As you install it, rotate the new lock part so one leg of the spring will catch on the lower pin. As you continue shoving the pin through, use a small screwdriver and press the other leg of the spring down so it will catch under the roll pin also. Check for proper action of the newly installed parts. The new stainless steel lock catch should be as close to center of the lock body as possible, some side-to-side play is normal.
Reinstall the black plastic locking sear, you will have to rotate the catch into the lock position as you slide the sear back into place.
8
Replace the C-clip at the back of the lock body which is used to hold the black plastic locking sear in place with one of the new steel discs. Slide one of the new steel discs onto the shaft and position the hole in the disc as shown in Fig. 9 and secure with the set screw using an allen wrench.
9 (to be placed)
AFTER POWER ACTUATORS ARE INSTALLED IN COMPARTMENTS:
Install the new operating rods along with the plastic straps as shown in Fig. 10 and check for proper operation.
10

If ever necessary, the units can now be unlocked manually with the key by inserting the key, rotating to the locked position and then back to the unlocked position and pressing in on the button.
NOTE: Be sure to place the discs properly and be sure the set screws are tight.
Repeat these steps for the other side and then re-install your newly modified lock assemblies back into your Avalanche the opposite of how you removed them. Some “wiggling” may be needed.
You are now ready to install the power actuators. Take one of the actuators and place the assembly in the inside lid area as shown. There is of course one assembly for the driver’s side and one for the passenger side. See Fig. 11
11
As you place the assembly, use care to see that the locking bar sets into the hole that you previously drilled in the OEM lock body approx. 1/8” while the actuator is fully retracted as it would be in the “unlocked” state. Make sure that the locking bar does not come in contact with the new stainless steel latch part and the latch rotates as it would when normally unlocked.
After you are sure you have it in the correct location, use the 8x1/2” black phosphate screws to secure the unit in place. Use three screws on each side. It is not necessary to pre drill, as the screws will cut their own threads into the plastic lid. Be careful not to over tighten. Repeat for the other side.
To run the wires out of the compartments it is necessary to remove the tail light. This is easily done by opening the tailgate and removing the two black screws on the inner edge of each tail light module. After removing the screws, gently move the light module left and right while pulling outward. Once the module comes out you can either let it hang while you complete the next steps, or unplug it and set it safely aside.
Next, use a 1/4” drill bit and drill a hole in the location as shown in Fig 12. You may need a long bit or a bit extension. Use care to drill ONLY through the metal Not all the way through and into the plastic compartment parts. Now install the nylon grommets in the hole you just drilled.
12
Use a small diameter wire or coat hanger to insert in the hole and “fish” the wires from the actuator back through the hole. This takes a little patience but you’ll get it. After you have pulled all the wire through from the compartment, route the wire loom section and secure with the straps as shown. See Fig. 13
13
If you have already installed a power tailgate lock, you can connect the wires from both sides into the wires going to the tailgate lock module. If not, do the following steps…
Remove the plastic door sill panel at the back door behind the driver’s door by pulling upward on the plastic sill trim piece and drill a hole and install another nylon grommet. After the wires are through this hole, lift the sill panel at the driver’s door and route the wires to this area. You can now use the quicksplices and on 2002 models: connect the Red wire from the actuator to the Tan with Black stripe wire and connect the Black wire from the actuator to the Gray with Black stripe wire. The wires will be the same sizes, be careful not to connect to smaller gray wire.
2003+ models: Red to Tan and Black to Gray. (NO BLACK STRIPES)
You can run the wires from the passenger side actuator to the driver’s side and splice
into the wires under the chassis coming from the driver’s side actuator.
Or you can drill a hole under the back door rocker panel on the passenger side and run the wires from the passenger side actuator the same as you did on the driver’s side connecting the colors the same way.
This is a picture of the driver’s side with door sill removed. After making taps, push the quicksplices into wire channel and replace door sill.
Check for proper operation with the lids open. Then replace the door sill panels and secure all wires properly. Check for proper operation with the lids open again and close the lids and you’re done !
